This is one small step for a CLC one giant leap for an NQT!

As a newly qualified teacher I have decided to use these blogs as a kind of informal way to record all of the new things I experience. When I first got the job as a teacher in one of Sunderland’s fine City Learning Centres I had no idea of the variety of things I would experience due my decision to move away from, shall we say, more traditional teaching environments. Feeling like I’ve settled into the job after a term and a half, I feel now is as good a time as any for my first entry.

This coming Monday (29th of March, the year of our lord 2010), I, with my esteemed colleague Peter Wells, will be delivering a day designed to educate 40 enthusiastic primary school children about sensors. Splitting the group we are going to have two activities running concurrently. In one room students are going to use LogIt probes to conduct experiments and test predictions with regard to how reflective and translucent certain materials and colours are. Students will also predict and explore how certain types of cup conduct heat and how to track this. While this is going on, the other half of the group will be probing the environment of the common woodlouse and its neighbours. This will involve students visiting the garden area, collect specimens and examining them under our digital blue microscopes. They will also research facts into the crustation and create a multimedia record of their findings, including videos and photographs alongside their research.

I feel that Monday will be an exciting adventure for both me and the pupils involved. I feel truly privileged to be in role that is both enjoyable and allows me to work collaboratively at the forefront of education, particularly with regard to kinaesthetic learning and collaborative teaching techniques.
